Dr. Alfred Jatho is a leading public health oncology expert and educator, serving as the Head of Community Cancer Services at the Uganda Cancer Institute. With extensive experience in cancer prevention, early detection, and health promotion, Dr. Jatho plays a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s national response to the growing burden of cancer.
His work focuses on developing and implementing evidence-based strategies for cancer control emphasizing health literacy, behavioural change communication, population-level risk assessment, and community-based screening programs. He is especially passionate about bridging the gap between cancer policy and practice, ensuring that underserved populations have access to critical health information and services.
Dr. Jatho’s research interests center on health promotion theory, primary health care, implementation science, cancer risk factor analysis, and cancer control planning. He has contributed to national and international studies on cervical and esophageal cancer, health communication, alcohol-related cancer risks, and access to care in vulnerable settings.
A dedicated mentor and educator, he also supports the training of future public health professionals, teaching subjects such as cancer prevention strategies, health communication, epidemiology, and research methods. Through his leadership, research, and teaching, Dr. Jatho is advancing a vision of equitable cancer care in Uganda rooted in prevention, community engagement, and informed health policy.
