Restoring Confidence: UCS’s Artificial Breast Initiative

For many women in Uganda who undergo mastectomy, life after breast cancer comes with deep emotional and physical challenges. Without access to prostheses, survivors often resort to improvised solutions that affect their confidence and dignity.

Recognizing this need, Uganda Cancer Society (UCS) came on board in 2021 to raise resources so that survivors receive artificial breasts free of charge. Partnering with Cancer Aid Organization, a group of survivors, UCS supports the production of locally made prostheses that are lighter, more comfortable, and affordable to produce at UGX 40,000 each. Every woman also receives professional fitting and counseling to restore confidence and self-worth.

The 2024 Abreast4Her Campaign, held during the signature UCS Sukuma Dance Fitness event, dedicated part of its proceeds to this cause. Support has also come from partners such as the Rotaract Club of Naguru and the Rotaract Club of Kampala South, alongside other well-wishers who have rallied around the initiative. By tying the campaign to community-driven events like Sukuma Dance, UCS has raised funds, built awareness, and mobilized public involvement in a powerful way.

The impact has been profound. So far, over 350 women have benefited survivors and patients who once relied on improvised solutions now walk away with prostheses that fit comfortably and look natural. The joy is visible in their smiles, their renewed confidence, and their restored dignity. Many have shared that they now feel more comfortable in social settings and more positive about life after cancer. By restoring dignity to hundreds of women, UCS continues to demonstrate that cancer care goes beyond treatment it is also about helping survivors live full, confident, and empowered lives.
